Do AI chatbots hallucinate?
General AI chatbots can and do generate confident, wrong answers — it is inherent to how they generate text. A chatbot that answers directly from verified Q&A knowledge does not: in our public 158-question audit, Impact AI produced zero fabricated answers.
- 1.In September 2026, the CEOs of Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and xAI publicly agreed that today's most powerful models are advancing faster than anyone can fully control.
- 2.Hallucination is structural for generative models: they predict plausible text, not verified text. Grounding and guardrails reduce but cannot eliminate it.
- 3.The deterministic alternative: match the question to a verified answer and return it. If nothing matches, say so. That is the pattern Impact AI uses — 95% of out-of-scope questions in our audit were correctly declined.
- 4.Anyone can check our numbers: the full audit dataset is published at /benchmark under CC BY 4.0.
